We have heard from Carl and Robin in Iowa city, and they are very blessed that their home is safe. Their neighborhood happens to be on high ground, and has escaped the flood waters which are devastating the area in which they live. The floods are touching their lives in very real ways, but they feel blessed and safe.
Robin tells me the news coverage there is 24-7 about the flooding and bad storms. Many bridges and roads are closed. Schools are closed. Many neighborhoods have been evacuated, or will be soon. The water is rising, and will not crest until midweek. Everywhere the rivers and lakes have exceeded their limits, and much land is underwater. Even hospitals in vulnerable areas are being evacuated. For church Sunday, only the Primary held regular meetings, while the men went out sandbagging and the women prepared and delivered sandwiches and other food to volunteer rescue workers. It reminds me of when Brigham Young asked from the pulpit for volunteers to go save the handcart company!
Carl was sandbagging with a man who had been at it for fourteen hours. The whole community is united to fight back the waters and try to save property and rescue those in need. Carl and Robin have food storage, bottles of fresh water, and plenty of flashlights and batteries, though so far they still have water and electricity.
Peyton could not go to preschool because of the flooding. When he heard this he asked his mom if they could "build a boat like Nephi" so he could go to school. She said, "Peyton, I don't know how to build a boat." He replied, "God will show you how. He showed Nephi how to build a boat!"
Let us keep them in our prayers, and also include prayers for the vast numbers of individuals, communities, and businesses which are suffering from this grand scale disaster. We are proud of Carl and Robin for being so prepared and faithful, and send our love. For a peek at some of the news stories and pictures from their area, check out these links:

Wow, that is so crazy. I'm so glad they are safe and that they are prepared. It reminds me of my own inadequacies at getting prepared. I hope everything stays safe for them...if not, they could always build that boat :) We'll be praying for them.
I'm so glad they're safe. What a crazy experience to have first hand. Though I have to admit I love how communities seem to come together when things like this happen. It just makes you realize that there are a lot of great people in the world.
Hamlin lake is actually flooding as well...the lake has risen three feet and is into the grass in the front yard of the cottage. Apparently the swamp is running through the boat house and there are trees and boats just floating around in the lake. Crazy!
Wow. Those pictures are scary. We know just from the few times our basement has flooded a little bit, what a hassle water can be. I can't begin to imagine flooding on that scale and all of the things and homes that must be lost or ruined. I think it is very cool that the church members went out helping in the community. That is really what the gospel is all about, isn't it? We will keep them in our prayers, knowing that Peyton's great faith will help them build that boat if necessary!
